Differences Between Chronological and Functional Resumes
Like fingerprints, no two resumes should look the same, but any job seeker should follow either one of two styles of resume writing: Chronological or Functional. How is one different from the other? Here are some major points.
What to highlight – Chronological resume highlights the applicant’s job history, from the most recent to the oldest job taken, while the functional resume emphasizes the job seeker’s areas of skill and accomplishments.
Who should use them – Chronological resume fits best for those who are seeking jobs within the industry they have been working in, as it will provide a logical job history and solid experience for the applicant. The functional resume, meanwhile, works for applicants with a mixed-up job history, those who jumped industries on each new job, as well as those who aspire a career change. Fresh college graduates can also utilize the functional style of writing resumes.
How hiring managers read it – Recruiters have a bias towards chronologically-written resumes because they see it as fact-based and easy-to-read. Those who submit their resumes in a functional style, however, may have to write it well for the hiring managers to appreciate them, as they see this kind of resume hard to skim over and has a tendency to hide flaws in the job history. To keep a functional resume pleasing to the recruiters, make sure to include the company you were working with on each bullet that explains each accomplishment.
